I need to return to that poem more often. I saw a common garter snake sunning itself on a hiking path the other day before it scampered off. It didn't fart, that I can tell. Sorry, they don't technically fart at you: "These snakes will also discharge a malodorous, musky-scented secretion from a gland near the cloaca."
Thanks for the info, I did not know that and if I encounter musky gland scents in the future, I will be delighted to bask in the knowledge of a snake non-farting in my direction.
I have an essay in my first book about an encounter with a garter snake swallowing a brook trout. It's called "Creekside Drama." I have a picture from that encounter too. I'll send it via DM on twitter or something.
What a gorgeous snake! I wish you could post pics in these comments. I’ll put it in the next WanderFinder, along with a link to your book -- is it “One Sentence Journal”?
post of an ancient snake sculpture in Bali (not sure how to post a photo or image):

This is incredible, Cal! I had no idea people were so into snakes. I’ll have to mention this in the next post. Thanks!

I totally need to get “Does it Fart: A Definitive Field Guide to Animal Flatulence.” (https://www.hachettebooks.com/titles/nick-caruso/does-it-fart/9780316484138/) Apparently, the question about snakes farting kicked the whole thing off!

Also, thank you for the Berry poem. I always know that poem is out there, but it still hits me hard every time I see it.
That one’s an absolute heart-stopper for me, too.
