Sorry, they don't technically fart at you: "These snakes will also discharge a malodorous, musky-scented secretion from a gland near the cloaca."
I have an essay in my first book about an encounter with a garter snake swallowing a brook trout. It's called "Creekside Drama." I have a picture from that encounter too. I'll send it via DM on twitter or something.
